The State of Things - September 2024

Lots of progress, not all of it aesthetically interesting!

We've arranged a new water supplier AND had a man in to tell us the water from the taps is still safe to drink!  And...

... we've signed a new contract for Gas & Electricity. Exciting stuff!!

It's a long story, but the building lost its Premises (Alcohol) Licence when it closed. Thankfully, the CEC licensing committee have seen fit to grant us a new one!

This is the platform lift on the way to Screens 2 & 3. There's no room to ramp (instead of steps and a lift) this drop but the plan is to replace this lift with something both more pleasing to the eye and reliable!

We're keen that equipment and furniture surplus to our requirements finds a new home - to this end we've been able to find a new home for all the tables and chairs from the bar!

It's a distinct possibility that the new Filmhouse toilets will have surfaces something along the lines of the samples pictured above.

This 'Covid Cabin' still stands as a reminder of the dark days of the pandemic - though of better days too as Filmhouse was at least open!  We will be responsibly disposing of this in due course. This one always seemed redolent of a visit to the cinema in RW Fassbinder's 1970s Berlin!

Unlike the other platform lift, this one is not being replaced - it is being removed! Screen 2 will have level access so there will be no need of it. Heartfelt apologies to anyone who ever got stuck in this old one.

The office kitchen formerly used by all the staff wasn't big enough to swing one of the mice that occasionally ventured into it. We decided it's time for a bigger one...

As some of you will know, this is the kitchen area formerly used by the Edinburgh Film Guild (beyond the end of the Screen 3 corridor). If a picture were to be taken from this exact spot in 6 months time, it would show the back rows of the seats in the new Screen 4!

We found this old bit of Filmhouse 'merch' in the cafe bar (it's a cup!) and it gives us some ideas for 'merch' of the future... More widely, we've charged a local design company with sprucing up the 'identity' of Filmhouse - though the decades old, iconic logo will remain!

And we've advertised for the first job in the new cinema, the Executive Director! The job is advertised here
